The very best Salsa and Merengue dance tracks.
There are hundreds of great salsa and merengue songs out there but you may only have heard a small selection. How many DJs do you know who will take requests or ask for customer feedback? If you find such an animal, please capture it, treat it kindly and send it to Newcastle.
How do you know that what you are listening to is any good?
Just because people are dancing does not mean they like the music being played. It's just that we need to dance. I'm sure lots of "salsa tourists" who drop in out of curiosity and never come back, too often leave with the impression that they have not heard anything so very special. Well, now is your chance to contribute your favourite tracks to make up a playlist of The Very Best of Salsa and help make the best impression. Check out the tracks on offer here and send feedback. Post your own in the salsa forum and I'll add them to the list.
So what makes a good dance track?
Of course it's all a matter of taste, isn't it? Well, taste is based on knowledge and experience. The greater the range of experiences to compare one thing against another, the wider will be your taste and the better will be your judgement. In the end, a good mix of top-notch dance songs to suit different tastes is all that matters: you can't please everyone all of the time.
The best tracks are those that you must dance to. You cut short the conversation, you find your feet moving of their own accord and you grab the nearest partner. You are uplifted and inspired, carried away to salsa heaven! Examples? How about: Amarfis - Mejo Dejo or Celia Cruz - Hay que empezar?
Do we need DJs?
Naturally every DJ thinks he is indispensable but have you noticed that a specially compiled CD put on Random plays an equally acceptable selection? OK. Up to a point. The Random function could play a sequence of fast tracks or merengue after merengue with no variety, whereas a good DJ will be watching the mood of the crowd and select his music accordingly. |
